The Classic Motorbike Kawasaki H2 750

The Kawasaki 750 H2 did nothing to ease the growing environmental fears of the 1970s.
Since Honda had stolen a march on the whole motorcycling world in 1968 by the introduction of the first recognised “super bike”, the CXB750, just beating Kawasaki who had their own new 750 in the pipeline, Kawasaki had started to push the boundaries of motorcycle design.
Kawasaki stole a march on Honda in 1974, by both overtaking the CB750 and at the same time producing a new breed of motorcycle, the 900cc Z1. Kawasaki had just wanted to beat the CB750, and the Z1 acieved this for them.
However, the 750 class was far from dead, and continues to be competitive today.
Enter the Kawasaki 750 H2.
With it’s triple cylinder 750 engine and three exhausts, the styling was very similar to the Z1.
Unlike the Z1, the H2 was a two stroke machine that smoked heavily and guzzled fuel at a rate of 20 miles per gallon!
This was a mean and wrist wrenching bike, and not for the inexperienced.
What made it particularly interesting was the fact that both peak power and peak torque arrived within 300rpm of each other, peak torque arriving first.
What this means is that when riding at low speed the bike sounds a bit burbling, and feels gutless. However, a small turn of the wrist and the bike takes off like lightening and all but pulls your arms off.
Not only that, but the single disc brake on the front made s.lowing down from high speed difficult to the extent that a high level of concentration had to be maintained.
Kawasakis press release for the H2B, which was in fact a slightly less powerful version of the H2, informed the reader that the bike demanded “the razor sharp reactions of an experienced rider”.
After a short and perhaps brutal life, the H2 was discontinued in 1975.
