The Honda CB750 – A Modern Classic Japanese Motorcycle
Posted by Zac Kurtsmier on August 22, 2010
British, American and the European manufactured motorbikes enjoyed world wide dominance until the late 1960s.
However, since the late 1940s, Japanese manufacturers had been enjoying ever increasing popularity in their smaller capacity machines.
This led to something verging on complacency from the European and American manufacturers, who saw themselves as untouchable in the “big bike” class.
October of 1968 was a momentous year in motorcycle manufacture. Triumph had in the early part of the year, launched their new big bike – the 750 Trident. Despite this, the end of the year would be a body blow for Triumph, something that they just did not see coming.
The 1968 Tokyo motorcycle show saw the shock launch of Honda’s CB750. The styling immediately caught the eye. Flowing lines, as opposed to Triumph’s rather “square” look, mostly as a result of the rectangular “bread bin” tank, and the stunning four cylinder engine with its four exhaust pipes, disc brakes front and rear, indicators and an electric start made this quite something.
This was a Rolls-Royce of a machine. The design brief was to develop a new engine that was suitable for long journeys – in other words without the usual amount of vibration – and “the bigger the better”.
Indeed, given the usual parallel twin design of so many bikes at the time, trying to expand these out over 500cc was found to be impossible without unacceptable levels of vibration. Testing showed that inline 4 cylinder engines were the best configuration for the new and smooth CB750.
This was one of the first bikes to lose “character”, in that improved seals meant no more leaking oil! It was an instant success, indeed the first batch to be imported to the UK were all sold before arriving in Britain. Honda engineers had achieved what they had set out to do, a modern, reliable and good looking bike that revolutionized biking.
Many people feel that the CB750 represented such a leap forward in motorbike design and thinking, that it was, in fact, the first modern day superbike.
Motorcycles are Zac’s first love. He loves nothing as much as riding, cleaning and servicing his collection of bikes, and knows how important it is to store them properly. He uses genuine Harley Davidson motorcycle covers. For more information and fantastic deals on bike covers, visit www.harleydavidsonmotorcyclecovers.net.
