Motorcycle Loading Ramps – What To Look For In A Ramp

If you want to carry your dirt bike or motorcycle safely in the back of a truck when you’re head to the track, trail, or even to a bike show, then motorcycle loading ramps are definitely an essential piece of equipment. If you think about how much money and time you have invested, then getting a real quality loading ramp is almost a no-brainer.

It’s important to use the right ramp for loading and unloading. One important factor to look at is the height from the ground right up to the truck bed. Another factor is the size and the weight of the bike. The rule of thumb is that the heavier the bike, the more of a challenge it can be loading or unloading. The risk of any damage occurring can be lessened considerably by using the right ramp.

Motorcycle loading ramps are frequently made out of metal. The metal of choice is often aluminum. In order to get the best traction, ramps are often designed with a textured surface. Alternatively some ramps come with holes which are drilled out at equal intervals.

If you are in the habit of loading or unloading your cycle by riding it on and off, a great feature is the safety strap. This strap attaches to an end of the ramp and can then be connected to the back of your truck. This prevents the ramp from moving while you’re using it.

A better ramp might also have rubber padding on one of the ends. This end is the one that leans against the truck to keep the ramp from moving while it’s in use. The padding is a good way to avoid scratches as well.

Motorcycle loading ramps are usually available in one of two main styles.

The first is referred to as a non folding ramp. These ramps will have one long straight span. They are often manufactured out of aluminum. In general, an aluminum loading ramp is able to handle loads of 500 pounds or more. Aluminum is the preferred kind of material used because of its relative light weight. That makes it easy to maneuver especially when you are on your own. The spans may be perforated to give more traction when loading motorcycles.

The second type of ramp is referred to as the folding ramp. Folding ramps can be folded into sections of two or three parts. This allows for simple storage and setup. Folding motorcycle ramps will usually have a greater weight capacity than you get with the non folding kind. Because of that they are ideal for larger heavier bikes or ATVs where the extra width is important.

For folding ramps, aluminum is the preferred material because it is much lighter than other metals, and so easier to handle. Aluminum also is resistant to rusting.

Also available are ramp extenders. With ramp extenders, you have an inclined ramp along with a bed extender. This can come in very handy when your cycle is too long for the bed of your pickup truck.

Motorcycle loading ramps come in a wide variety of designs and styles. They have a lot of useful features which will ensure the safe and easy loading of your valuable motorcycle.

To get your bike or ATV to the trail, you’ll need to load it up in the back of your pickup. This is another place where it pays to be safe. Don’t trust your expensive motorcycle or 4 wheeler to a cheap ramp. Check out the solid motorcycle loading ramps at aluminumloadingramp.org as well as the huge selection of ATV loading ramps.
