If you’re luck enough to be in possession of your own boat, be it for leisure or for fishing, then you may be aware of trolling motors. These electric motors are often seen as having a number of advantages over the gasoline version. Usually the greatest positive factor is that such motors create very little noise. Also, as they require no fossil fuels you can be sure that you are not contributing to environmental destruction by adding to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. To be able to enjoy years of the open water with no problems is going to require an efficient maintenance of the Trolling Motor Parts, should your boat be fitted with this type of engine.

An electric motor will not work in the same manner as the gasoline motors so it will need a different level of care and understanding. You should spend as much time as possible teaching yourself the steps required for correct maintenance and operation.

If a motor fails on you when you are miles off of shore then the outcome can be disastrous. The time it takes to learn the basics of the trolling motor and its various parts can mean the difference between being lost at sea and having a happy fishing trip.

To start with you will need to know how trolling motors are powered. Typically a boat engine would require you to fill it up with gas at regular intervals. With an electric motor you require a battery charger. When the power gets low you need to top up the engine with electricity. This can be done when docked, or onboard when at see; it will depend upon you and your requirements. Be sure to follow the charging instructions correctly as otherwise you may damage the motor batteries.

Before heading out on any trip always give the motor parts a once over for damage. It is all too easy for fishing lines and other items such as weeds to get tangled up in the propeller. If you set off without noticing a problem then the cost of any repair can be very expensive.

All trolling motors should come with a maintenance guide that explains the routine checks necessary. This guide should become as well known to you as your favorite novels. Learn the names and terminology for the different components of the engine. This will help you identify a problem should it occur and also find replacement parts in a quicker time. Just because the engine is electric does not mean it will need less care and maintenance.

When the batteries are being charged it is wise to keep an eye on their progress; especially when charging offshore. It can occur that the charger puts too much electricity into the cells which results in damage. Typically they will need replacing every few years.

As long as you take the effort to understand the information contained in your maintenance manual then your trolling motor should provide you with thousands of hours of use without a problem. If there is a need to replace a battery or other part then you can easily find the exact piece through the internet in just a short time. There are various websites that deal in boating spares.
