Goodyear Tires Over The Years

For Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, a world-wide rubber and tire maker known for tires like the Goodyear Fortera SilentArmor, the number 13 was very good luck. In the year Eighteen Hundred and Ninety Eight (1898), Frank Seiberling who was a U.S. inventor, formed the company Bicycle tires, carriage tires, horseshoe pads and poker chips were the original products for the cutting edge company and all of the thirteen hardworking original employees contributed greatly to the production process which took place in their beloved Akron, Ohio production plant.
There has never been any connection between Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and Charles Goodyear, who invented vulcanized rubber in 1839. However, the decision was made by Mr. Seiberling to commemorate Mr. Goodyear and name the company after his profound contribution to the rubber and automobile industry.
Ford Motor Company was heavily involved in the upstart auto racing sport and they approached Mr. Seiberling to provide the tires needed for the race cars and this is when the big break came for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company supplied the tires for Ford’s Model T car, which was Henry Ford’s remarkable new vehicle that he envisioned as the car for the masses. History provides us with the interesting story that was to come. They became a leading international organization in 1909, when Goodyear Tire and Rubber started building tires for airplanes.
By nineteen hundred and twenty six, Goodyear Tire and Rubber was clearly the largest tire manufacturer in the world. At that time, the racing tires which Goodyear had produced created its fame and the reason that most people knew Goodyear was for Goodyear Tires. Having achieved a high profile recognition due to the renown and popularity of the Goodyear tires, the company rose to a new level of growth and production.
Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, now a multinational corporation, branched out into other areas. In Ohio in 1956, Goodyear began operation of a nuclear processing plant. A Goodyear subsidiary formed in the 1970s known as Goodyear Aerospace Corporation, from the aircraft designing and manufacturing, Goodyear Aircraft Company, was responsible for the crafting and manufacturing of the space shuttle. As was the trend among other companies, Goodyear Converted their first facility in Akron into a design and research Technical Center, at considerable cost.
Over the decades, Goodyear has been responsible for a great number of successful inventions and innovations. Goodyear now stands as a true global conglomerate, and one which has delved into a wide range of very profitable and significant ventures.
Goodyear currently finds themselves third on the list of the world’s top tire manufacturers, behind Michelin and Bridgestone. It should come as no surprise, then, that individuals looking to purchase tires, will likely consider Goodyear as one of their prime choices.
