Other areas you should inspect for signs of poor condition include the frame, the engine, and the oil cap. While anyone attempting to sell a bike that has been in an accident will no doubt clean it up and try to make it as shiny as new (in hopes that no one would notice), there are usually signs of damage that cannot be completely erased. Check the handlebar grips, as they are the first part of the bike to hit the ground when it falls.
Check the chain to make sure its in good repair and look for signs of unusual wear and tear that might indicate that it hasn’t been kept well oiled. Someone who neglects their chain isn’t likely to pay attention to other less important component of the bike either. Also carefully consider the mileage shown with the amount of wear and tear the bike shows in general. Older machines had odometers which were easy to manipulate. If the odometer reads low and the bike looks like its been ridden through a war zone, their might be a problem. Even if the owner claims the bike was only ridden by their dad to church on Sunday, the truth is the owner probably rode it to Canada and back a few times. If the story they tell doesn’t add up to the mileage or the bike condition then walk away.
When it comes time to buy, be sure that the motorcycle you are purchasing is the one you really want. Cheap motorcycles should not necessarily be in poor condition, and if you have any reservations about the purchase you are about to make then trust your instincts.
