Pocket Bikes – Why So Popular?
Posted by Eric Wagner on August 16, 2009
Pocket bikes are essentially miniature motorcycles, they have the same sleek look as real motorcycles but are much more affordable. Motorsport enthusiasts all over the globe are collecting pocket bikes to add to their collections. A pocketbike or minibike as they also are called, comes with all the parts of their full size cousins, but are only about two to three feet tall. They are usually powered by a four stroke or two stroke gas engine, but electrically powered models are also becoming increasingly popular. Pocketbikes can be a toy for a kid or a powerful racing machine for a pro racer. How you use it is up to you.
If you care about having a stylish machine that doesn’t look like anyone elses, or simply like to customize your ride, the pocket bike world will make this very easy. To begin with, you can get the machines in a large variety of colors, patterns and designs. Add to that the ability to further customize by adding decals, changing handlebars and so on. The general design of minibikes follows real size bikes very closely. So a chopper mini bike will look like a miniature chopper, a pit bike will look like a miniature motor cross and a mini pocket rocket will look like a smaller version of a GP racing bike. A good price point for your first pocket bike would be around $350. You can get a pocketbike for much less than that, but then compromises will have to be made. Most importantly you will get a frame that is made from inferior metal alloys making it heavier and less sturdy.
Unfortunately pocket bikes are banned from most public roads so make sure to check the laws where you live. You can still ride them on private property though.
I will have to say that at first glance, most pocket bikes do look like toys. However it is a big mistake to think this way about these machines. They can reach very high speeds and when coupled with the fact that many people ignore wearing proper safety equipment, a simple fall from a pocket bike can have disastrous consequences. It wont be as bad as a real motorcycle crash, but on the other hand, most people wear safety gear while riding those.
I know you will have a blast riding your minibike. Hopefully you will ride safely as well. Have fun!
