Posted by Chuck Charles on April 6, 2009
The dangerous sport of motocross is one that will definitely challenge you. Propelling your bike through the air, around the track filled with hills of dirt, the rough landings, and plenty of crashes too. Luckily there is specially designed motocross accessories and gear made to protect you, while you do this sport. A few things are listed below that are required for you protection as far as motocross gear.
What to look for in a helmet.
Most likely the one piece of gear that is the important is the motocross helmet. Your head will be protected from the collisions or crashes you will have alone of with the many bikes in the race, so this needs to be very durable and have good strength, and be able to be worn with comfort at the same time. These helmets are usually constructed of Kevlar, fiberglass, carbon, or composite type material. The specific purpose for the helmet is the absorption of a crash impact so the rider is not hurt as bad, whether the crash happens between two riders or just with the ground itself. This can even prevent a head injury. The helmet should also have vents. This helps keep the biker’s head cool by allowing air to flow through. The liners should be able to be removed so it can be cleaned easily.
Motocross Goggles
Goggles are usually used in motocross along with the helmet to protect the biker’s face, eyes and the rest of the head. These goggles usually aren’t tinted because clear gives the best clarity needed for motocross. They definitely need to totally shatter proof to give the most protection to the eyes especially during a crash. With new technology being introduced with the goggles they can transform according to the light quality. Also make sure the goggles have a proper strap and padding on the part that meets the face. The goggle strap needs to around the entire helmet and be sturdy enough to keep the goggles from slipping. Then the goggles should have comfortable padding on all areas touching the face. Strips that tear off is another optional feature you can get on your goggles. Believe me your goggles do get debris and dirt on them from all the dirt flying up off the track, when you tear the dirty strips off there is another clean one underneath.
What the jersey is like.
The motocross competitor needs a comfortable, lightweight, and a jersey that is also well ventilated. These jerseys have to be made out of a mesh material to offer the necessary ventilation. The main aim of this jersey is to be comfortable to wear and of course allow the rider to have freedom of movement.
Gloves are important too.
The gloves for this sport are made to be comfortable and lightweight. They are for improving you grip on your bike so that you can control it better. Some other features that can be included in the gloves are vents and silicone tips on the fingers.
How are the pants suppose to be?
Motocross pants should be lightweight, soft, comfortable, flexible, durable and most of all have the ability not to restrict your movements. A lot of the pants basically are made of spandex with the addition of patches of rubber for added protection.
What you need in the boots.
You need boots that will take in all the action and live up to it by being durable and able to protect your feet and lower legs. The only purpose of the motocross boots is to be tough and to protect you. They should have soles that absorb shock and shin pads for protection, they should also be flexible, comfortable and streamlined. Most of the boots also are scratch resistant and protect you from your legs getting hyper extended.
