West Virginia Mountain Tour Day One
Posted by midicity on August 24, 2008
Went with members of the Manassas Honda Riders Club (MHRC) for a three day ride with 11 other bikes and trikes to West Virginia. Starting out on Friday morning we met for breakfast at Tom’s Diner in Manassas and then assembled in the parking lot by the Manassas Honda to start the ride.
Rolling out at 9am we traveled in two groups proceeding westward and southward towards West Virginia. We worked our way to US211 and saw the sign that warns motorcycles of the “High Crash Area” A sign of a twisty road ahead. We proceeded westward and southward joining Rt 42 through the valleys of VA toward WV.
The second group caught up with our first group at the dairy stand we stopped at for lunch. We proceded on into Rockbridge County to join Rt 39 westward through Warm Springs VA and into West Virginia. Photos of the ride are in the Choppernutz website photo section.
In West Virginia we rode to our destination for the evening – Marlinton, VA.
Some of the riders were staying in the Bed and Breakfast down town , but a few of us were in the Marlinton Motor Inn, a very biker friendly motel.
Riding up the hill from town to the Marlinton Motor Inn, I hit a rock and smashed my oil filter on the new Goldwing. I’ll write about that on the next post, but did a roadside repair and made it to the motel. We proceeded back into town, met up with the other riders and rode to the Green Bank Radio Telescope. It is very impressive in size and there are multiple telescopes on the compound. The tour was free and well worth the ride to get there. All throughout the ride we were surrounded with mountains and the mountain streams flowing through the valleys. We returned to Marlinton for supper and planned out a route for the following day of about 160 miles and used a great brochure – Pocahontas County Motorcycle Touring – to plan the trip with a side trip to the Cass scenic railroad. We planned to ride “A Pleasant Valley Ride” from the brochure on day 2.
